I run my business on a shoestring. Actually, it’s more like half of a shoestring that’s missing an aglet. That is to say, my business budget is very, very small. When it comes to getting the things I need to run my business, I have to get creative. Some of my creative money saving attempts have been successful, and some have bombed horribly. But with the costs of running a business on the rise, I have to keep trying. Social Media

There has been a lot of buzz about using social media to promote your small business, cause, or organization. Anyone with a Facebook page (and who doesn’t have one of those?) knows the satisfaction of clicking on the “like” button and seeing that little “thumbs up” icon. (I personally enjoy getting an email that someone has read and “liked” one of my blog posts! It makes my day, hint, hint.)

According to the book Social Media Boom! by Jeffery Gitomer, “social media is the new cold call” when it comes to sales and marketing. Social media includes, blogging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and websites like LinkedIn. These different platforms offer easy and inexpensive ways to get the word out about your business.

The Power of Networking

I am a terrible networker. I confess it freely. I’ve never been a schmoozer in any shape or form. At a party or convention, I’ll be one of the people hanging out along the fringe of the room eating snacks and reading whatever written materials are provided. I’m a writer. We keep to ourselves.

I hate to mingle and network, but I have come to realize the importance of this skill when it comes to building a business. LinkedIn Update

So far, I’ve actually made some business contacts through LinkedIn. No paying jobs have surfaced yet, but I think it’s still early for that any way. I did, however, receive a very nice recommendation from a colleague that was posted to my profile for all to see. That can’t be a bad thing, right?

As I explore the LinkedIn website, I’m finding a lot of positives in joining. As I broaden my contact list, I gain access to some of their contacts. It really is a great way to network. Perhaps over time some of these connections will pay off in new clients and paying jobs. I’ll continue to add to my profile and do whatever I can to get my name out there. We’ll see what happens.
